Hollar

Hollar is the ultimate mobile destination for cool products at incredible deals starting at $2. Featuring thousands of items from toys and electronics to home, beauty and apparel – including unique curated gift and party collections – Hollar is all about the joy of discovery.

I was Sr. UX / UI Designer at Hollar from 2016 - 2019 and in that time, I had my hands in every area of the brand's User Experience. I continuously enhanced the experience from defining, researching, designing, and iterating on new features, to enhancing features we already have. My work also extends to designing our iOS and Android application UI.

UPDATE: Hollar was recently acquired by Five Below.

Homepage Navigation Update

Before the homepage redesign, the desktop version of our navigation displayed just 2 of our most shopped departments and a “Shop by Category” link, which took users to a page with our categories listed out. This was not ideal for browsing our site, as it forced the user to leave the page they were on to see the other departments, disrupting their shopping experience. Adjusting the layout of the navigation and search bar allowed us to display more of our departments so new users can get a better understanding of the wide variety of products that we had to offer. I introduced a hoverstate that displayed each department’s subcategories without needing to go to a new page like users previously had to do.

1-Click Add to Cart

In order to checkout on Hollar, we required customers to add at least $10 worth of products to their carts. This proved to be time-consuming since many of our products were just a couple of bucks and customers had to navigate to the Product Detail Page to hit the “Add to Cart” button. Implementing a 1-click Add to Cart feature allowed customers to quickly add several items from product feeds to their cart and compare them before checking out (pretty similar to how a lot of us shop at brick & mortar dollar stores;)). We turned on this feature for 50% of our site visitors and found that it really boosted their Average Order Value! It was then fully launched for all traffic.

The Design Process:

To design this feature, I first ran a competitive analysis of existing e-commerce sites that have 1-click experiences, then created wireframes and prototypes of how that would work for our own unique needs, presenting those to the team and stakeholders before I executed and delivered the final designs to the development team. I worked closely with the development team to provide detailed QA notes and ensure that the new feature matched the designs, was free of bugs, and was easy to use. I designed this feature for our responsive website as well as our iOS and Android apps. This feature now lives on as part of the Five Below website and apps, as they acquired Hollar shortly after my time there.
